Twenty Years of Patches — Finally Replaced Correctly

The Problem
A Lodi homeowner had been patching the same driveway since 2004. At some point the patches outnumbered the original asphalt. The surface was uneven, the layers had separated in multiple spots, and the concrete apron at the street had heaved from a combination of frost and root pressure from a large ash tree on the parkway. They called R&D Paving and said they were done patching and wanted it done right once.

What We Did
Pulled out everything — all the original asphalt, all the patch layers on top of it. When you’ve got multiple generations of asphalt layered like that, the base underneath is usually in better shape than the surface suggests, because all that mass insulated it. That was the case here — the base was good once we stripped it. The ash tree root at the concrete apron got a targeted cut and a root barrier before we poured new concrete. Full-depth new asphalt over the cleared, inspected base.

The Outcome
The homeowner said it felt like a completely different property from the driveway alone. No bumps, no patch ridges, no uneven transitions. They also said the concrete apron at the street finally connects to the road the way it should have all along.
